Saint Anyway was formed as a collaboration between Cloquet, MN-born singer-songwriters Jamie Kallestad (guitar, vocals) and Tony Petersen (banjo, vocals) in 2007. What began as a small duo project developed into a full-time touring operation in the early 2010s with the addition of Dane Levinski (bass, vocals), and the group spent a few years constantly driving around the country and playing to rowdy crowds of all shapes and sizes all over the US. Along the way, the trio befriended the traveling piano player Ben Cosgrove, whose work on keys and accordion would round out and complete the band’s distinctive sound.

Saint Anyway played its last shows in 2014, but the four members remained close friends and in 2020 they spontaneously decided, in the 8th month of pandemic quarantine, to keep sane by remotely recording a few songs that had never made it onto an album. Working as fast as they could, in four different cities, they quickly and joyfully generated the six songs on RETURN TO GOLD, a new recording that effortlessly captures the spirit of the band in its days of heaviest touring but also reflects considerable advances in the group’s emotional and musical maturity. From the ebullient title track to the wistful “Santa Fe” and all the way back around to the band’s frantic cover of Marah’s “Living on the Road,” RETURN TO GOLD is the band’s best work: a tight and effective showcase of the unique combination of skills, influences, and shared experiences that still holds these four musicians together all these years later.
